At the end of May, we went to Gloriavale. TVNZ’s Sunday programme had been shooting in Timaru… and on a blue, blue day, we drove north through Geraldine, then Windwhistle (whose name I wanted to use), stopping for a pie at Darfield… and then west, over the Alps, turning right at Jacksons (with no apostrophe)… through Inchbonnie (whose name I also wanted to use), and back inland towards the mountains. And then, suddenly, across Lake Haupiri, there it was – the Gloriavale Christian Community. It’s beautiful there. And it’s not.

The people we’ve been speaking to – who’ve lived in Gloriavale and been broken by it – desperately need you to understand the “not” part.

The landscape aside, these people do not think Gloriavale is beautiful.

They do not think it is safe.

And they do not think we know the full truth about what happens there.
