As James Harrison watched the Black Caps take on England in the Cricket World Cup final from the comfort of his armchair earlier this month, he was reminded of how far his life had come.

The former Gloriavale member, now living on the outskirts of Temuka, South Canterbury, says he would never have been allowed to watch cricket while he was living in the secluded religious community.
