Gloriavale leaders may still have a chance to fight case

Gloriavale leaders have been refused the chance to appeal on four grounds against anEmployment Court case that ruled a group of women were employees when they worked inthe community.
However, the Court of Appeal says it needs more information before it decides whether togrant leave to appeal on two narrow questions of law.
The leaders went to the Appeal Court to ask for leave to fi ght on four grounds against theEmployment Court’s decision that recognised the group of former Gloriavale women asemployees, rather than volunteers.
The Court of Appeal refused leave to appeal on those grounds, but found two questions of its own which could have wider significance for religious or volunteer organisations. The questions were whether the women worked for reward and, if not, were they volunteers who did not expect to be rewarded.
