How We Help

We are a bridging organisation which helps Gloriavale leavers

We can help Gloriavale leavers to have their basic needs met, to get established in a home, to secure a job and to help get their children engaged in education. This includes liaising with other agencies and community groups to provide the essentials in the first few months, and ongoing emotional support, advice and friendship for many years after.
Here's How We Can Help Leavers

What we can do

We can help Gloriavale leavers get settled into life outside of the community. This can include:

  • Initial Landing: Birth Certificates, Phones, Clothing, Groceries, Petrol, Family Activities, Liaising with Banks, WINZ, IRD etc
  • Home: Emergency Accommodation for a period of weeks, Assistance finding a rental home, Furniture & Household Items
  • Vehicles: Interim transport organised by way of loan vehicle. Contribution towards purchase of a family van and/or work vehicle. Insurance assistance.
  • Job: Support to find a suitable job, including training and recruitment support if necessary.
  • Education: School Uniforms, School Books & Stationary, Schooling set-up costs (bags, lunchboxes etc). Help find a sponsor for the children’s school fees for the first 6 months.
  • Drivers’ Licence: Licence Costs, Free driving lessons (within the first year)

GLST Services we Offer
Advice & Help
We aim to support Gloriavale leavers by providing them with timely advice and practical help on how to set up life in their new communities. After the initial set-up costs, the majority of the support offered to leavers is by way of an Advisory Service. The Trust offers on-call support to provide information on how to access a range of social services, educational, counselling or legal support which might meet their needs. This support is available for leavers regardless of when they left. This will include, but not be limited to, working with IRD, WINZ, and banks, helping with job searching, and finding appropriate clothing & housing.
Social Services
We liaise with a range of existing social service agencies to ensure Gloriavale leavers are not disadvantaged through lack of information, funds or experience. The Trust will try to build a healthy relationship with leavers, gaining their trust and offering emotional and spiritual support. We will attempt to create a network of trustworthy people who will support the family in the first few months until they are better established. This will include, but not be limited to, organising budgeting courses, parenting & marriage advice, career & educational advice, legal advice & guidance, and accessing funds for counselling and poverty relief.
Financial Support
After the initial settling period, we generally don’t provide ongoing financial support to leavers. We don't operate as a lending institution, but we will work with leavers and their family if they find themselves in financial difficulty. We can provide support, and engage budgeting and debt services. Learning to manage finances can be one of the most stressful things when leavers start their new life, and we will encourage leavers to become financially prudent, secure, and literate.
Integration
This includes liaising with other agencies and community groups to provide the essentials in the first few months, and ongoing emotional support, advice and friendship for many years after. We also provide a friendship/visiting service for leavers who settle in the South Canterbury region, (and in other regions where practical), to help establish and encourage their involvement in their local community and churches.
