Haupiri fire: Blaze breaks out at Gloriavale Christian Community

| NZ Herald | Imogene Bedford |

A fire at Gloriavale Christian Community occurred in a building used as a waste oil plant, Fire and Emergency say.

Multiple fire crews were sent to the Friday night fire at the communitty’s compound in Haupiri, 63km east of Greymouth.

Crews were alerted to a structure fire just before 9pm, a Fire and Emergency spokesperson said.

Two crews sent to the scene found the blaze well involved, prompting an additional response from Brunner, Greymouth and Ikamatua appliances.

No one was believed to be inside the affected building and the chance of the fire spreading to nearby buildings was considered small.

Crews were last night working to put out the fire and were waiting for the power company to arrive at the scene.

The affected building was far enough from surrounding buildings that there was no immediate concern about the fire spreading.
