Supporters of Leavers

Supporting someone who has left, or is preparing to leave, can raise a lot of questions. You may want to help but be unsure what is most useful or appropriate. The early stages are often a time of adjustment, and steady, practical support can make a real difference.

This page outlines what you may notice and offers simple guidance on how to support in a way that is respectful, steady, and helpful.

Understanding the Transition
Adjusting to life outside is a gradual process. There are new experiences, decisions, and environments to get used to, and it can take time to settle in. Everything from daily routines to simple choices may feel unfamiliar at first. Keeping things simple, allowing space to adjust, and focusing on small steps helps build confidence and a sense of stability over time.
What You Might Notice
As someone adjusts, you may notice changes in mood, confidence, or behaviour. At times they may seem settled and positive, and at other times unsure or withdrawn. They may find decision-making difficult, become easily overwhelmed, or change their mind often. These changes are part of adjusting to a new environment and tend to ease with steady, patient support.
How to Support Well
The most helpful support is calm, steady, and consistent. Listening well, being patient, and allowing them to make their own decisions helps build trust and confidence. It is important to avoid overwhelming them with too much information or too many choices at once. A low-pressure approach makes it easier for them to take steps at their own pace and feel more in control.
Practical Support
Simple, practical help can make a real difference. This might include transport, attending appointments, setting up services, or getting everyday essentials in place. Helping to establish basic routines such as meals, rest, and daily structure can also provide stability. Focusing on immediate needs helps reduce stress and creates a more settled starting point.
Boundaries & Expectations
Clear boundaries help create a stable and respectful environment for everyone. Simple expectations around routines, shared spaces, and responsibilities provide structure and consistency. Being clear and consistent, while still being flexible and understanding, helps reduce uncertainty and supports a healthy living environment.
When to Reach Out
If you are unsure how to help, or if a situation feels complex, it is appropriate to reach out. There may be times when additional guidance or support is needed, especially if things are not improving or you feel out of your depth. GLST can provide advice, practical support, and direction so you can respond in a way that is safe, balanced, and helpful.
