WorkSafe notified of Gloriavale fire as cause investigated
WorkSafe has been notified of a fire at a Gloriavale boiler shed as an investigation into what caused it continues.
The fire caused the community’s commercial pet meal manufacturing business Value Proteins Ltd to shut its rendering plant.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said firefighters from five volunteer fire brigades attended a fire at Gloriavale near Haupiri on Friday night.
It was reported shortly before 9pm and the last crew departed shortly after midnight, they said.
“The location of the fire was reported as a boiler shed. Information on the origin and cause of the fire is not yet available.”
A firefighter experienced a medical event during the call out, they said.
“He attended Te Nikau Grey Hospital and Health Centre for testing and was released a short time later. We are supporting the firefighter and his whanau.”
A WorkSafe New Zealand spokesperson said it had been notified and was making inquiries.
A statement from one of the directors of Value Proteins Ltd said emergency services safely managed a fire at its processing facility . The fire was contained to the boiler shed and caused structural damage.
“Safety protocols were successfully activated, and there were zero injuries.”
The fire caused a temporary shutdown of the rendering plant, they said.
The companies office lists Joshua Disciple and Diligent Stedfast as directors of the company and its shareholder as The Christian Church Community Trust.
According to the trust’s latest financial statements filed with Charities Services, Value Proteins Ltd is a rendering company receiving waste from freezing works and rendering it into bulk pet food ingredients for local and international sale.
It sold more than $2 million of rendered deer-derived protein meals in 2025. Its lamb and sheep output was worth almost $1.2m and it produced more than $1.9m tallow.
Several companies held registered securities over the company including Azelis New Zealand, Sew Eurodrive (NZ), Composite Floor Decks, Manufacturing Suppliers and S Fisher and Sons.
