Royal Commission into Abuse in State and Faith-Based Care

In February 2017, the Human Rights Commission launched its “Never Again E Kore Anō” campaign calling for an independent inquiry into abuse in State (and eventually Faith-based care), and a public apology from the Government. Permission was granted for an Inquiry.

The Commission went up and down New Zealand interviewing people who had been abused in various contexts.

The Gloriavale Leavers’ Support Trust and a group of former members advocated for Gloriavale’s inclusion in the report and Gloriavale was named as one of the eight faith-based institutions specially investigated. Leader Howard Temple and then Principal Rachel Stedfast were publicly examined by the Commission in a hearing in 2022. The Commission poured resources into interviewing a large portion of Gloriavale adult former members, along with a handful of current members.

Fault was found with Gloriavale, and they are mentioned more than 150 times in the report.
