Convicted sex offender Howard Temple has ignited more controversy after attending a community market on the West Coast.

The former Gloriavale leader pleaded guilty to twelve charges of abuse against six girls over a period of 20 years.

Last month, the 85-year-old was sentenced to 26 months behind bars but was released on bail pending an appeal.

A member of the public was at the Moana market near Lake Brunner on Friday when she saw Temple with other commune members and took a photo.

The woman is friends with some of Temple’s victims who are upset that he was allowed to attend the family-friendly event.

“I think it shows how out of touch Gloriavale is and how they can’t be trusted to make good decisions. It was grossly uncomfortable,” said the woman.

A former Gloriavale member said they were at a loss as to why Temple went along.

“I don’t understand how the judge didn’t realise that adult supervision from a current Gloriavale member was a bad idea. Afterall, his offending occurred with other adults present and watching.”

Another person, who has connections to former members and supporters, said the public have an expectation that people who plead guilty and are sentenced should not have the freedom to wander around market days.

“It’s a strange justice system. It shows a lack of social etiquette, understanding and consideration for others.”

1News understands that Temple’s bail conditions require him to reside at a Gloriavale-owned property away from the main compound. Prior to sentencing, he was allowed to return to the community for work and to attend worship services.

Temple’s lawyer Michael Vesty said his client has not broken any bail conditions, as he’s allowed to have contact with people under the age of 18 if supervised.

Gloriavale’s Overseeing Shepherd Stephen Standfast has been approached for comment.
