Gloriavale man accused of multiple violent assaults on boys
Gloriavale man is facing 14 charges of assaulting four boys with blunt weapons.
Vigilant Standtrue, 42, was granted interim name suppression at his first appearance in April. He previously taught at the school at the Gloriavale Christian Community and still lives there.
He did not make submissions to continue the suppression order and opted not to have a lawyer representing him in court.
The offending is alleged to have happened on the West Coast between 2000 and 2010.
“I’m happy either way, I’m not worried,” he told Judge Gerard Lynch when asked if he wished to continue his name suppression application when he appeared in the Greymouth District Court on Wednesday.
Judge Lynch asked him to reconsider because they were serious charges.
Standtrue said he did not want a lawyer and asked to be remanded without plea because he had not received full disclosure from police.
The court heard the boys were aged about 8 and 10 at the time of the offending.
Court documents show the alleged weapons used were a shovel handle, a broom handle, sticks, a plastic pipe, an axe handle, a pitchfork handle and a steel-toe gumboot.
The judge asked police to provide disclosure so Standtrue could make an informed decision on whether he wanted to defend himself against the charges.
He was remanded to enter a plea on June 19.
Standtrue previously had a limited authority to teach from the Teaching Council which enables people without a teaching qualification to teach in positions where there is need for specialist skills or skills are in short supply.
